Lower Extremity Venous Ultrasound Q & A

When might I need a lower extremity venous ultrasound?

A lower extremity venous ultrasound is used to evaluate the blood flow through the major veins in your legs. The most common reason for this ultrasound is to rule out blood clots (DVT). Doppler ultrasound is used to measure your blood flow and blood pressure by bouncing sound waves off circulating blood cells. If you have a warm, red, or swollen area in your leg, it is often recommended to have a lower extremity venous ultrasound.

What can I expect during a lower extremity venous ultrasound?

After the sonographer explains the exam to you, you will be asked to undress the affected leg, or both legs if your provider orders it for both legs. You will be asked to lay on your back, with the head of the bed raised a bit. The sonographer will smooth gel down the inner portion of your upper thigh, starting in the groin. After imaging the veins in the thigh, the sonographer will go behind your knee to image those veins. The lower leg and ankle are the final areas to be imaged. Once the exam is over, the sonographer will help you clean up and dress. Lower extremity venous ultrasounds are comfortable procedures at EloRose Diagnostic Ultrasound.

How should I get ready for a lower extremity venous ultrasound?

You don’t have to do anything special to prepare your body for a lower extremity venous ultrasound, but it is important to dress appropriately. EloRose Diagnostic Ultrasound recommends wearing clothing that is easy to remove and expose your leg(s).
