What is a testicular ultrasound?

A testicular, or scrotal, ultrasound assesses the tissues and structures within the scrotum, particularly the testicles.

During the ultrasound, a hand-held transducer emits sound waves, which travel through your scrotal skin and into the scrotum.

The sound waves essentially bounce off the structures inside your scrotum and return to the transducer. That information then creates digital images representing the tissues and structures inside your scrotum.

Testicular ultrasounds aren’t painful. You might feel some pressure as your ultrasound technician moves the transducer around to gather the best images, but it fades quickly, and you won’t have any aftereffects.

What problems can a testicular ultrasound detect?

Testicular ultrasounds can help detect many different issues within the scrotum, including:

  • Fluid buildup
  • Blood flow problems
  • Varicocele (abnormal swelling in a vein within the scrotum)
  • Testicle injury
  • Testicle twisting
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Tumors or cysts
  • Undescended testicle

Boys and men may need a testicular ultrasound in several different situations. In children, the ultrasound is usually done because of symptoms like pain or swelling or following an injury to the scrotum.

The same reasons for having a testicular ultrasound apply to adult men. Also, your doctor may recommend a testicular ultrasound if they feel a lump when performing a scrotal exam.

Infertility is a very common reason for adult men to have a testicular ultrasound. An ultrasound can detect problems that may contribute to male infertility, such as varicocele.

How should I prepare for a testicular ultrasound?

Extra preparation isn’t needed to prepare for a testicular ultrasound. However, you should plan to wear clothes that are easy to get in and out of.

During your ultrasound, your technician provides a privacy drape and only exposes the necessary areas to perform the procedure.
