When might I need a carotid ultrasound?
A carotid ultrasound produces images of the vessels within your neck and examines the blood flow within. It also evaluates for clots within these vessels. A carotid ultrasound tests for blocked or narrowed carotid arteries, which can increase your risk of stroke. High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, family history of stroke or heart disease, recent stroke, coronary artery disease, and unusual sound in the carotid arteries (bruit) detected by your doctor are all reasons why you might need a carotid ultrasound.
What can I expect during a carotid ultrasound?
Carotid ultrasounds are comfortable procedures at EloRose Diagnostic Ultrasound. You will need to expose both sides of your neck so the sonographer can smooth on a clear gel over the area of interest, which helps the ultrasound transducer glide over your skin.
The sonographer will apply the transducer to one side of your neck, pressing gently to deliver the sound waves that create images of your vessels. The images appear on a nearby screen as the sonographer captures detailed images in real-time. When the sonographer finishes the first side of your neck, you will turn your head so the sonographer can repeat the imaging on the opposite side of your neck.
At the end of the ultrasound exam, the sonographer removes the gel from your skin, and you are then able to dress. You can return to your normal daily routine.
How should I get ready for a carotid ultrasound?
You don’t have to do anything special to prepare your body for a carotid ultrasound, but it is important to dress appropriately. EloRose Diagnostic Ultrasound recommends not wearing a shirt that covers your neck and do not wear a necklace.
